You may already be aware of the charity based community Arts facility that was developed on Plymouths Belliver Industrial Estate, perfectly situated between the city centre and Dartmoor national park !

Of course what you may not be aware of is that due to Plymouth city councils constantly escalating and impossible demands and unprofessional conduct have attempted to force closure of this lovingly prepared facility, denying the community groups use and benefit of the expertise contained within.

As a result the premises have become ' occupied ' by a cross section of both dedicated local student and civilian protesters so that the diverse and all important works  might be allowed to continue and even reach completion .

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience during the course of our protest , and would encourage support , presence , or query in any form from our local individuals and groups, please get in contact with one of our helpful members of  'staff ' that would be more than happy to help!!

Photographic expedition across Dartmoor National Park ( not for the faint hearted ) leaving from the 'Institute' we will stop in the Lopes Arms for a drop of fuel for the mission, then head across the common to the fringe of the national park, heading north east away from the Tavistock rd towards Clearbrook,where we will stop for another liquid refreshment and lunch. before carrying on our heading to The Royal Oak at Meavey , additional drink optional before heading off again to Sheeps Tor and Burrator Reservoir ( journey one way = just over two hours walking ) climb the hill see the view , before walking home again ! ( approx 10 miles in all )

Swimming Pools

What the hell is going on in these counties, these few counties that I personally call home that have the finest coastlines in the country and the least distance to travel from major urban area to the shore. 

Why do we need all these swimming pools? 

Surely it hasn't escaped anyone's attention that Plymouth has nearly as many superfluous pools as it does coffee franchises. Plymouth that in recent years invested millions of pounds into the lido on its own sea front and more recently still had finished building a 50 million pound yellow box with another pool in it and again has pledged renovation to the facility at Plymouth Pavilions, and now Tavistock is planning to build another.

Is it reasonable to assume that all of these facilities are a massive drain on our electrical grid not to mention the asset those monies would make to our jeopardized public services. It seems odd seeing as we are about to run short on power with residences and existing businesses already starved for capitol due partly to the issue of cost/ supply x demand of said power. 

When they say in the not too distant future "well we had to build all these new nuclear power stations so we could heat the pools and charge you to use". 

I'm all for tolerance as a general state of existence but this is out of control ........ and it has got to be stopped ..

Better the Devil you know....

What on Earth happened to good old common sense in this country ?
 I for one cannot see the logic behind everyones presently frantic sense of unbridled 'ambition'at the moment!
There are of course some assurances that this has been allot of fun for allot of people, but it has also created allot of misery for allot people; but I think that the overall consensus for decades now has been, that along current lines of predicted trajectory this is an unsustainable system!

 Why is it we are tolerating 'leaders' ( that is individuals and parties of ill repute and proven uselessness) that continue to press forward with the illusion of improving this now outdated notion of progress....what about maintenance?

It is maddening to me that even on a local level no consideration seems to being given to sensible priority?

 There is a place on the fringes of Dartmoor national park ( actually it was one of the places used as a base for Spielbergs ' War Horse ' ) where several years ago a beautiful bespoke ...albeit modern arts facility was erected as a new build at the cost of several million pounds, a wonderful addition to the cultural eminence of such a beautiful place ....already it has closed down ' as a victim of the recession'.
 Yet within plymouth city centre not 10 miles away . Because of the ridiculousness of this years distractions from more important social concerns ( additional point of note beyond the regional interest im writing about now ) They have just finished a 50 million pound leisure facility they have housed in a big yellow box next to those mangled spiders legs of a football stadium.
In Millendreath just along the coast from Looe there is a plan to spend 50 million on a brand new holiday home scheme and just on the fringe of the same town hundereds of new affordable homes have popped up over the surrounding hills. In Plymouth the scale of new housing is astounding almost feverishly covering every open piece of green or undeveloped land is turned into social experiments to gauge the minimum requirements for human habitation ( no concern going to optimum). Almost culminating in the commitment to build plymouths own little homage to londons ' Shard'  at the former site of the ' Occupy ' plymouths camp!!

 In tavistock they are now going to make The Wharf ( again a purpose renovated facility at high expense only several years ago) Into the focus for yet additional capitol, to encourage it to become a leading arts and music facility!

 Here at the Valerio Institute of Alternative Learning  we have accomplished the very same thing as they have set out to ; only we have managed it in one year with no funding , little money, and no staff!

There is a plan in progress at the moment to build homes, brand new homes with cheap labour and cheaper materials so that the ignorant might lay claim to being a part of that estate agents lie coined from the days of thatcher .....the property ladder!
 Only so city to city the socially / financially elite can house themselves in great big glass and steel observation decks, where with detachment and disinterest, they can watch humanity suffer ... not simply from the human condition that plagues all souls ...but from an imposed hierarchy breeding constant contempt and even disgust for our fellow sufferer!

 As it is there are thousands of square feet of unused , unaffordable , ill repaired commercial and residential properties all across the city and surrounding regions.
  Our agriculture is under threat with farms and small holdings foreclosing due to the imposed demands set out by those distant untraceable cowards at the end of the 24 hour helplines and customer support.
 Homes being repossessed, Industry closing , Infa-structure being sold off to commercial concern!
 In a time when our economy is not set to improve for some time due to the crimes of peers that have been tolerated for too long . We have an entire generation of thirty something year olds living at home with their parents or hiding from their social responsibilities in a pointless education system or worse off travelling a rudderless uncommitted swathe of youth just mooching about standing on the fringe of humanities latest destruction before shuffling off to discuss how thoroughly unimpressed they were by it!
 Here at home Money continues to be stripped from Education, National health care , Law and Order , and home defence!

 How about we take just ten million from your next intended waste of money and life you will insist on hanging in the middle of my favourite view. And you start a training initiative, A national, regional, local, government set initiative to train individuals that are being thoroughly screwed by this current dis-functioning poor performance .
 You give those individuals ...all of the empty commercial,  residential , agricultural space on a contractual rent / rates free arrangement for a set time, to act as trainee maintenance and repair contractors. Then with a structured educational programme offer them basic progress courses in practicalities! construction , manufacture , raw industry , and yes even agriculture!

 There ive just solved for free what no administrator or banker could despite all there resources and entitlement to holiday!

Thats the way you would solve the housing crisis ....vacant property and prosperity, region to region, the employment crisis not to mention the sense of self satisfactions that will dispel depressions, reduce recessions and get a generation that needs it some much needed exercise, and ideally begin to spark in them a sense of interest , and pride for their region and eventually their nation!

Want to no more, well ill not give it away for free! lets get on with this for a bit build up a bit of national wealth and then you might be ready for my idea!

Ho Hum!

Well considering that the international knock on effect is well under way and now even China's economy is suffering a level of uncertainty in terms of its longevity.
 Im sure that there must be some like-minded realists out there that have some grasp of the remarkably circuitous nature of international relationships, and the more interwoven, the greater the scope of accomplishments through positive human interactions, and of course the scale of un-settlement  from a larger silent majority - and access to new kinds of urban unrest ; and indeed as urbanisation in its current format is nothing more than a remaining symptom from the now well outdated industrialist model that has now expanded across the international community with a rife degree of saturation.
 Here in the ' UK' weve approximately X space and give or take 70 million basic population ; In America by comparison theyve Y space and Z population, australia and canada again comparitivly large in acres for the scale of population.
 So of the so called 'developed' nations we are in trouble aren't we ?
So What to do ?
Are we going to build tiny pigeon holes in big filing cabinets for humanity in this country as they do in japan?
 Or even the rest of the world over ; all of whom are now looking to explore new ways of containing its humanity ....with japan being the first advertised element to entertain a necessarily radical proposition ( see previous article concerning 'Mile Wide City' ).( only because our government has been unwilling to acknowledge my work concerning the subject!). And all of this because the outdated model has become proven to be both undesirable and unsuitable ......and consequently imminently unprofitable!
 Yet we here are still attempting to emulate an idea that was outdated over a hundred years ago but aggressively embraced and industrialised for the production of the american sky lines, and has been kept in spite of its clear inability to constructively ( excuse the pun). Integrate with its natural environment .... in any natural environment ..... the whole world over!
For my generation the broken misshapen white high rise teeth weve installed across the worlds sea fronts, a hideous grimace marking the the senile humour of what paradise used to look like , and how long ago before its individualism and identity were stripped. for the sake of the fat unimpressable tourist industry and the useless comforts it insists and subsists upon.when it was a place worth seeing !!
 Its a shame that it never occurs to them as they stand on the balconies of whatever apartment on whatever floor in whatever beige habitat, with its air conditioning, pay per view movies. Staring out at the big blue thing that used to have fish in it .....now covered in shoals of white leisure vessels. the inhabitants of which all dry humping their own illusions of the picturesque paradise they saw in the travel brochures back home. From the road to the airport and all the industry and telecom pylons, the plastic sandal factories and the ice cream retail space, the water-parks and the cocktails, and all of those disillusioned fools all thinking that the thing they are running from wont get them in the end!
 All Gnawing away at the beautiful simplicity  we had originally come to embrace.
 Avoiding the hideously grim meat hook realities, of an existence we cannot abide in an environment we have come to loathe.
Suffer a little more for the 'Heaven' it affords us!
 Another year and i can once again afford to borrow that piece of another corporations real estate and for a high price i can sit and enjoy the view from the edge of our perpetual destructionand be able to distract ourselves from the fact that ..what we want....or at least seem to .....is costing us all so very much!!    

You know....Itd had never occurred to me that my organization might be a charity!

well in these modern times of precedent for every kind of dispute and even a precedent for every kind of extenuation causing exemption to said precedent .........lunacy sheer lunacy!!
 but i suppose its a sign of the times .....we began our little experiment at well lets say interval stages the latest instalment of which has been this ' expansion '  the incorporation of The Valerio Institute for Alternative Learning. which hasnt been made any easier due to the nonsense spilling from central government and the tumult it has caused all down the ranks!
 It seems that an individual such as my self .....a humanitarian and a philanthropist attempting to work for the sake of the passion of the thing and not the profit of it with vested interests in inproving environment through positive influence attempting to forge sensible litigations that would enable the economic and social developments of this my home land and enact through the appropriate and existing channels inspite of how absurd it would naturally seem to me , a means of training programmes, housing programmes and regional and national development and regeneration initiatives.
  So after a taught few months of consistent and inappropriate threats and mishandling from our local authorities it seems i may actually be able to continue this lifes work ....which is naturally quite important to me, and really the scale of multi faceted contemporary concerns addressed  aught to be the focal point of so many.

 maybe even those who are paid regardless of performance or competence and have it in their job descriptions to be handling this stuff ....in fact lets get all those bastards off of facebook off of holiday and back from lunch so i can have a day off!!

   To single-handed create a means of resolve through the forging of a new breed of super art ! for this economic, social, political,  ecological nightmare brought about by successive evils and imbecile, with no staff no funding and a fraction of natures resources, and a Fool! for an assistant .' Valerio theyd say hes mad...hes insane....hes dangerous ..'

It looks like Japan will be the first to lead the world in tackling our species habitation crisis, more prominent than Oil or Economy and possibly even environment .. although the two are very closely interlinked!
  Taisei construction corporation will be looking to develop a two mile high city in Tokyo's harbour and based on the artists impressions they look very future very sci fi.

 but please ask yourself one question .....would you like to be condensed in this fashion ...and if it must be so ....who would you rather designs this human encapsulating monolith .....Taisei construction corporation or Art by Valerio.......

 The Illustrations above show the two most recent works in progress . from a pre-chosen observation point(namely looking across Burrator reservoir and Sheeps tor looking south toward the distant plymouth sound.for illustrative purposes i have exaggerated certain elements of perspective) i have affixed the perspectives of what i believe our two possible outcomes could be from this stage ...the titles are 'Heaven' and 'Hell' . Heaven comprising all of my own designs based on my own independent studies of optimised human performance through environment and stimulus.
 The ' Green Star House ' in the foreground and the ' Mile Wide City ' concept in the distance of the 'Heaven' illustration are true to my own designs!

 please note the similarity between the Japanese artists illustration for the future and my own rendition of 'Hell' the only difference of note being that despite the incorporation of the the city on the horizon the outward spread is ever present!

Thats an interesting term isnt it?...... immediately conjuring up imagery of the raving loony, perhaps looking something like the wee willy winkey from the nursery rhyme, only maybe sporting a nice white jacket with very long sleeves.....but that fantastical individual is of course a very glib stereotype........
 Now everyone knows a nutter when they see one dont they .....they are the ones that start telling you all about there life story as they wait in the rain at the bus stop wearing summer clothes and sandals in the middle of winter or vise versa and remarking on how inappropriate the weather is for the time of year, carrying a little dog strapped up in a babies pushchair, because ordinarily the dog acts as better company than people .......cos hes alright its just the rest of them.

As i feel myself  considering that perspective more and more, I wonder  why my sandals wont keep the snow off my toes and my rabbit wont speak to me anymore , and i watch with a sense of distance as my fellow humans continue to destroy my world, my views and my sacred places for the sake of their own masturbation aide , recreational entertainment or cosmetic product,or worse for the livelihood they have been cohered into needing for the maintenance of their perpetual state of misery .......it dawns on me ......no one is able to live and breathe in this mess weve created without acting as a continual menace to themselves and those around them.
  and that perhaps the very embracing of a little disorganization and unmeasured lunacy is just what we need right now!

A Right Royal Rip Off

The Royal Academy is once again looking to pool up millions of pounds to cover its ridiculous over heads, by playing host to ' The Summer Exhibition ' its quite a ruse really and they have been getting away with it for so long now its nearly as in bred as weve allowed our current state of democracy to become,
 During the life time of the Original Impressionists there was a similar system of ignorance evident in the selection processes of  the Salon, too the point that on several occasions the thousands of artists who could not get there work shown, created uproar so that the Marques had to provide a separate exhibition to show all of the works by the talented droves that were not representing the Napoleonic ideals.
  Today we have and astounding amount of talent that submits from home and abroad and the arrogance of the selection committee dont seem to acknowledge that the only reason that they can afford to keep there own sense of self importance is to encourage the disillusioned many to pay up for there chance to be seen in the halls of an institution that through its history has largely only celebrated the skills and contributions of the creative core that have kept this country afloat through wars rebellions depressions and celebrations after they have died ......but isnt that just the nature of this country as it stands the whole time you are seen to be making an attempt to improve or create something you are treated as an anarchist with disdain , then you go and die and all of a sudden you are endorsed and celebrated by the very scum that left you to starve .....I think that Aristotle was on to something..........untill they murdered him of course !!!  

You can keep your fuel prices your false wars and your phoney leaders ....oh yes and fuck off!!!

Discussing 'Occupy' with Joan Baez .....

with her resent appearance at Plymouth Pavillions i was fortunate enough to get Joan's thoughts on the current occupations. " Its great that young people are again trying to open up a forum for discussion in this country. and we should all show our support;"

 For more info I recommend that you pop down to the new unobtrusive camp situated on Plymouth hoe and talk with these very intelligent less than tolerant youngsters from all walks of life.

So When I approached the local government about taking on a large commercial space, this particular near derelict was one of the few that were offered , they couldn't believe their luck when I said ...yes I will take it !!!

a 20 mile walk to my little gallery distribution point down on the coast , and only a 10 mile walk to my parents, and only a 5 mile walk to Plymouth city centre with the means to be able to access the transport network to the rest of the country and further a field, but most importantly it was right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park !! so for me ...it was a perfect blank canvas to be able to set up a little arty hub

so we dicided to commit to it ... having handed over a great big envelope full of cash , that was immediately snatched from view by the local council , I took it upon myself to make a few adjustments,and make it ready for its intended purpose ...

so in between the logistics of moving an reasonable proportion of personal effects, building walls and working on the continually developing portfolio of art and design concepts, I even managed to maintain a few little outside commitments,projects,collaborations and exhibitions ....

after you design the thing, build the thing ....you have to paint the thing decorate it , curate it , promote it, and in order to maintain public appeal .....consistently diversify the thing ( from the previous gallery experiences I managed extensive experience of the latter )

the project was initially opened as a means of field testing the design paradigms for my own eco architectural masterpiece ' The Green Star House ' the optimum spatial allocation for human habitation !

but through circuitous circumstance I was able to take on some collaborative palaeontology projects with some local and national institutions, museums and education faculties

some of our ' bohemian ' style after hours parties / gatherings and shenanigans were certainly worthy of a few photos at the time ..... but alas as with so many of the ongoing tumults ... I am normally far to busy doing the thing .... to be standing around documenting the thing ! as we all should be really !!

and I should really give thanks at this stage for all those wonderful part time helpers / volunteers / hippies / friends/ beatniks/ collaborators and acquaintances that sometimes manage to catch me on camera during a quiet moment ....otherwise there really would be no record of me or my activities on this horrible soulless digitized life sucking machinery that you all seem to put so much clout and faith into ( what an age to be alive ) It still makes me smile when I approach a ' new gallery ' and introduce myself ....and the point of contact says ' who are you ' .... and these days I can quite happily say ' the fact that you don't know says more about your awareness ...or lack thereof , than my muted self effacing and still state censored activities '

these are I think the last photos I had taken of the space and this was just prior to hosting a week long arts and design festival.....unfortunately pretty much as soon as I finished the complete instillation , we started having some problems with the local authority. of course this was when the ' Coalition ' Government had begun to take effect and the whole of the countries admistration seemed to turn into a pit of completely self serving backstabbing , yet hugely inept and possibly retarded snakes  

it took a great deal of effort to complete the project and I have written a little more about this ordeal in my recent book ( available through stockists of original Artby Valerio )  but suffice to say that the final design was a magnificent piece of artistic display / interactive sculpture experience / Design creation and implementation and indeed political and social hub, and that is before any of the self engineered and tested eco and offgrid initiatives that I was able to finalise ( which was a running and functioning prototype of the now much discussed 'earthship' style project )... of course that was before such things were becoming common knowledge ...I do still reference the entire project with a huge sense of pride as not only was the entire enterprise self realized and funded .... but the epic legal battle it took to just maintain any sense of trade under the draconian and absurd actions of our local authority at the time

fortunately in spite of all advise to the contrary , the demented scale of authoritarian intimidations and a few little personal hiccups ( temperamental females and chinchilla mortality ) not only was the project completed ...the arts festival held ! but the self representing legal defence against these sinister clowns was colossal and certainly an experience and a fight worth having!, these days when I get the chance to actually reflect on this stuff, it is of course a little bitter sweet .... what might have been of the Valerio Institute had it not been for these hideous failures and corruptions of a completely farcical local and central government ... could have been something even more remarkable than it was. if I could have just been allowed to get on with the work peaceably  I could still be using Plymouth as a little base of operations, and in turn Plymouth would have had one less empty and near derelict building ..... but of course there is the hindsight knowledge that had I taken the judges bait ... had I agreed to continue as a tenant for these people ... then I am sure that given the state of decay in every facet of our so called contemporary governance ... then I certainly would have been unable to commit to some of the occurrences that have happened in the wake of this situation .... and without a doubt and just a little smile I can be sure there are no regrets x

Just a little bit of history repeated!

just as a brief note of comparison, I believe that i recall a story from the old testament in which a king Herod ordered the death of thousands of babies, and im left wondering whether or not as we have today just such a decree in the justified persecutions of the innocent, whether any of those soldiers under orders ever say to themselves .......'Hang on a minute' ......'This just dosnt seem reasonable' .

 Or im afraid the terrifying truth of the mob natured mentality as i see it , is that no probably not in fact id say that we are inclined rather to reach a frenzied point of disorientation in which case, soldiers or upholders of unjust laws begin to resign themselves to a distanced perspective allocating blame to some minority and actually taking relish  in the disproportionate measures endorsed, like the witch hunts for example or the anti Semitic policies of a well remembered former political party, when you start burning people or even suspecting people of needing to be burned  because they are too similar to something you dont like then its maybe time to take a little restock .

 as we lumber forward in this hap hazard fashion expanding our populations laying shameful waste to our resources and rendering huge measures of the space we need as uninhabitable, the liklihood that our neighbours and neighbours friends property boundaries squeeze up to each other, we will begin to notice more and more quirks and oddities that these people portray and we will condone and tolerate less and less.

 sounds pretty bleak i know ....and to some extent it is. This our world and our choice just how long we continue to perpetuate this lunacy is up too all of us. so yes it is bleak that we have allowed ourselves to degrade to this level, but it is also full of potential for tomorrow  may be the day that we prevent our silent obedience from keeping our actions in check.

How much room does a man need to stretch his legs?

Im sure there are volumes of facts figures and statistics put together from human observations made from all manner of perspectives, in terms of optimum daylight roaming terrain and available resources, of human interactions for optimum social developments, blah blah blah but in real terms what does all of that mean, as the design of our habitat and infrastructure continues to decimate huge swathes of oxygen producing green spaces where humanity used to go to escape the horrors of the systems they create for themselves to find a calm quiet inspiration when it is needed.
  how much longer can this be maintained, as our population here in this country approaches 70 million and you try to divide that up evenly across the million square miles or so ( as a generous measure ) that the brittish isles comprises, what does that leave you with ....ahhh but its still not such a bad figure , thats loads of room! what about roads the spaces taken up with car parks and carpet rights railway track and telecommunication towers. The inevitable failure of this infrastructure will simply give rise to another there will always be as there always has been human compassion and ingenuity and a desire to improve the means and lifestyle of the majority through the exchange of both of these things.
 Many people have been fooled in recent history by some very gifted liars and thieves into believing that they needed to buy the land they had a natural birth right too, so said liars and thieves could make their handsome commissions on these huge sums of money. And now what are we left with companies like taylor wimpy producing ' award winning ' rabbit hutches of 500 sq feet of modern living space for those who think a lifestyle can be maintained in such a tiny space.
 what a bargain youll feel youve got as the city centre apartment you overpaid for begins to look like dell boys tower block and the trendy little hub of housing you over look is decimated by the over populating public that try to live in such confined conditions spill out over each other......surely these are the early plan works for our own slums. but keep paying your council tax and im sure eventually youll end up with someone worth following!
