Amsterdam Land is not so bad really x

A.B.V @ 0T301

Show me an empty space and I will always tell you it will look better with something cool in it ... and dinosaurs are definitely cool ... why dinosaurs .. am I really that determined to avoid growing up ... well truth be told .. I have been doing a little more of the sciency stuff behind it for a few years now ... and indeed have even been involved in specimen excavations all over the world .. which is always fun to do , indeed at the moment I am mulling over the logistics of a short trip out to the Gobi Desert to dig up some bits and pieces

but really the thing that has always captivated me about the behemoths of the past ... aside from their impressible size and anatomical variety ... is of course in spite of those awe filling characteristics ... they like everything else .. have a fragile kind of temporariness...that should remind us humans ...of all ages that indeed all things can and do change ... all things ! in days like this when there is so much perpetuated fear and hate in the world .. mostly by those who profit from it as an investment ...it is so important to keep this notion wide awake in the youth and of course the adults ... just to help remind us .. of where we came from and where we are going ... and hopefully hold in plain sight the idea that all life ... all life .. is both temporary and precious and always subject to change x !

So thats why dinosaurs thank you very much ....

so come along to our next little workshop at The OT301 on Sunday 21st February for our latest 'Build a Dinosaur Workshop '

look forward to seeing you there x

Art op de Amstel!

Friday, 16 October 2015

and now for something similar ... but different x

' 13 '

I have been re considering an earlier theme of works of late .... the general essence of the amorphous mandala can still be seen as the major theme , however with the incessant desire mankind has to over assign familiarity to foreign principle , so that we might better grapple with the unfathomable I am purposefully and playfully interjecting slightly more insistence in the topographical nuances and suggestible innuendo, each of these pieces will be orientated around specific themes ,.... in small sets of two and three panel pieces, however the specific descriptions and names of the pieces will be limited to a seemingly random number which will have a specific research-able relevance indicating a its strongest reference , through Architecture , Philosophy , Physics , and Mythology , in many instances themes can and will run in parallel, just to keep the eye and the mind guessing !

Its all a learning curve !

All work and no play ..... encourages Jack to pour himself

This bass relief sculpture is one of a series , the really remarkable this about these sculptures is not that they are completely hand carved using only small craft blades or the stunning material in which they are rendered ( red ceder slabs )

the really remarkable thing is that these stunning pieces of wood , a wood native to Northern America

'On most sites eastern redcedar grows slowly, and long rotations are required to produce conventional sawlogs. Because the wood is used for small items, however, and there is wide latitude in acceptable defects, shortening of rotations and intermediate harvesting of merchantable wood are possible. About 20 to 30 years are required for posts and 40 to 60 years for sawtimber (11,25)'.

The above excerpt is from USDA forest service on line reference concerning juniperus virginiana !

these pieces of wood that are an absolute delight to work with and yet they were simply discarded ... thrown out for land fill , having been seen to be unfit for someones kitchen after what can only be assumed was limited use .....

so there is this tree growing down on the gulf of mexico somewhere its taken it 60 years to get to its current state amid the scenery it sits ........ so some one over here in europe can have a kitchen worktop for a couple of years before throwing it out on the street so that it can be hauled away in great big gasoline consuming vans to big man made holes in the ground and dumped in there with all of the out of vogue phones and outdated p.c's .

but then why not ,... why stop there ...when you can get some guy in some remote once scenic valley blow huge chunks of granite out of a mountain and send you that ... thats what you need .... that will make the place just right.....indeed just what the kitchen needs !

this really has descended into some sort of clearly visible raving madness !

The Vultures of Amsterdam Land

The Signature Style

Part of the ongoing body of works that have been come to be known as ' the Valerio Signature Style ' that has now come to encompass independent sub headings within the genre, including , ' The mandalas ' , ' The Orgy Balls ' , ' Studies of the Female Form ' , ' Cerebral ' and ' Unorthodox'

A manner of works I began working on as a child , to attempt to keep away from over embellishing them or over anthropomorphising or patterning , just to stay in the most grounding earthy tones and let the mind wander through the undulations to assist in the firing of the imagination

'The Under-exaggerated Origins of V'

After studying at Plymouth College of Art and Design, Valerio continued his studies at Sheffield Hallam University and Greenwich University and West Kent College.

Now based between his studio in Cornwall and Amsterdam, he is able to collaborate with some of the best known names in Art and Architecture on an international scale as well as here at home in the south west.

Valerio Describes his own work as ' dreamlike manifestations, evoking less than circumstantial references to archetypal memories of landscapes, and local geographies, figurative studies and all in between that which is captured in the veld of the diverse experiences that make up a lifetime.'

Chris Burchell, Art Critic and Curator of the Wharf Gallery , Tavistock 2010

written a few years ago now.

Valerio has been a keen art student. he has made excellent progress, demonstrating an imaginative and innovative response to a variety of stimuli, and has produced some outstanding units of course work.

Valerio has improved his ability to draw from observation with increasing skill and enjoys working in a variety of media, he has shown ability to draw from experience and imagination. Valerio has produced paintings of unusual quality, and shows a real awareness of the use of colour. His heightened critical awareness of other artists and cultures is an integral and successful aspect of his own work and he works well independently. Valerio's talent recommends him without question.

1998 Sue Lord artist and teacher

What do you make of the artist as a person?

Valerio , the man is a Raving Maniac, A genuine charicature of what an artist should be, hes eloquent and polite soft spoken and gentile , unless he is working on something of particular focus then he can be irritable , and unreasonable , never knowing if he is about to burst into song , or scream and shout a series of profanities against whatever is vexing him most at the time, even visitors to the gallery , ever outspoken and provocative toward debate, the constant array of models and well wishers that tend to come with the Artists Gallery appearances , can make even a quiet day seem lively!

Elusive is something of an understatement with this Artist and appearances are Rare as are his lectures and public exposures but a keen collaborator you will find the signature Valerio influence in many places you really wouldnt be expecting to find it, A very strong talent for such a young Artist already exhibiting his well developed style so that it is instantly recognizable, a Talent and a Character rapidly gaining in influence and popularity, and deservedly so!

101 Reasons....

From the series of sketchbook illustrations that eventually became the published book of illustrations ' 101 Reasons to choose a vocation in the creative industries ' the original series started out as a series of autobiographical sidenotes in my working sketchbooks, a clear homage to the work of Ralph Steadman and Hunter Thompson, are little cartoons I have been doing during those moments when you say to yourself ' what the actual F**k ??!!' which can happen a lot in this job !! the original set of sketchbook thumbnails were each revised for the publication and have always proved a great hit in their own right whenever they have gone on display at exhibition . Now in the 11th year of ongoing production, the series now consists of over 200 hundred images depicting recollections or reflections from Working Corporate positions in 2000 -my first pop up gallery ' The Arts Hole in Cornwall '2006- 'The Green Star House ' Design and build Project 2009- through the political and legal battles of the 'Valerio Institute'2013- to our most recent projects of ' Why Not ' in Amsterdam and the latest ART B&B and education projects running in parallel in Cornwall u.k and Amsterdam N.L 2016/2017 It Really has been quite a ride
