101 Descriptions of what a Valerio Signature Painting might be.........

When I started doing these swirly undulations way back when I was in school, the only reference people had was to liken it a little to Dali'esque and Giger'esque which of course I did and still do find to be rather complimentary, and when I first started displaying them they were rather groundbreaking , no one was producing work like this, certainly not among any of the little seaside galleries that I was frequenting ( and originally there really was not the internet for reference and research available ) indeed many of the galleries I approached in the early days would offer great praises for the work , but not see it fitting in ' their current portfolio's ' ( it was all pastel hue splashed paint flowers and beach scenes ) these days its rather different , there are many artists and designers it seems the world over that work in a parallel medium ,  of course what some artists would call ' inspired by ' might be complete plagiarism to some administrators understanding .....

and for the past 20+ years of producing and displaying these pieces I am of course always faced with a few ' well , what is it ? ' type questions .....to which I always give a slightly different answer , which has in itself become a little bit of an ongoing game ....

1.They are depictions of common understandings of all things lost to the conscious mind.

2.They are representations of common contemporary theories and theologies.

3.They are pictorial renderings describing that ever elusive unified field theory.

4.They are an abstract showcasing the story of evolution in its entirety.

5.They are ghosts of the forgotten folklore that is now almost unpronounceable in our current tongue.

6.They are biological – they represent the displacement created by human habitations.

7.They are meditative mandalas. They explore the minds eye's, route and process to bring the observer calmly round to reason.

8.They are amalgamated renderings of the textural tactility of the countryside with which I have made myself so familiar.

9.They map the pictorial form of my own decent into madness.

10.They are clockwork.

11.For someone somewhere they are the schematic blue prints for time travel.

12.They are innocence in its purest form.

13.They are what I have always done, they are the clawing of my hands as I grasp for that elusive breath that will allow me to enunciate all that I have to say to my fellow species.

14.They are my prayers.

15.They show the commonly under appreciated inter relationship we share in digital space.

16.They are merely the portrayal of an organic form...I cant be held accountable for what a pervert like you might interpret it to be.

17.They are a nice delicate, pictorial “Fuck You”

18.They are the bearings of my soul, my most intimate confession.
19.They are the renderings of the sacred truth

20.They are Architectural prototypes.

21.They explain Gravity.

22.They are a map to where dinosaurs went.

23.They are exactly what you need.

24.They show the commonly misunderstood relationships of atomic structure and its correlation with varying resonate frequency.

25.They are all I have been able to decipher from the Akashic records......so far

26.They are elaborations of the circles you make with the pen whilst on the phone...... asking if that painting is still available.......

27.They show the complexity and frailty of the human condition in a way that your subconscious responds to.

28.Puffs of smoke.........

29.Jacobs ladder

30.Ascension

31.Enlightenment

32.A pain in my ass

33.The other side

34.The shape of mysticism, the true colour of belief. The fabric of the vortex itself.

41.The DIY guide to genius

42.All the disparity I suffer from the imposition of the imposters.

43.My silent screams

46.The difference between you and me

47.High hopes and low expectations

48.The undeniable truth concerning the most unfathomable nonsense

49.My predictions of the future

New Arts market for Tavistock

The new arts market in Bank Square, Tavistock is under way where by the local councils are once again looking to the artistic community to provide free side shows for thier ailing commercial hubs in a vain attempt to bring about new interest.
Unfortunately this is a double edged sword as most artists that rely on a regular trade but are not able to command high prices have to have thier work out and exhibited in order to generate sales , so to many this will seem a wonderful opportunity to get work seen and sold, but alas these schemes tend to fissle out as poor sales reflect poor attendence and consequently participation. it would be a far greater thing for the council to aknowledge the benefit and culture that such a scheme would encourage if it were to be a funded opportunity.

The new arts market will be open one saturday a month untill October, again leaving room for seasonal interuptions and confusion concerning non sequenced dates.

In light of all of this I do wish the Arts market every success and hope that my predictions dont come to fruition , in order to make that the case please go along to support your local talents on

Beware the Whistling Fishes.....

cornwalls artistic heritage is full of unusual characters and little art movements and 'schools' some would argue that really the artistic heritage of the region extends back to Neolithic man, with the ancient stone circles and monuments that can be found dotted around the unspoilt landscape.

but in the more recent past , the level and variety of works that have been inspired by and / or created here, really are abundant.

the light, the water , the rugged yet verdant coastline and hills, the scrumpy , and of course the characters !!( although sadly the latter are fewer and farther between these days )

St Ives for example a beautiful little Cornish village built over a strange little headland  full of little tiny meandering lanes, that were built to accommodate small horse and cart and never updated for todays commercial traffics, used to be lined with a veritable menagerie of little art studios and creative and colourful characters

unfortunately as with every other facet of our lives, they are under threat from the neon whore that is commercialism, a chain gallery in every single fishing village and tourist town , has had a severe effect on the traditional arts of the region, so many people are fooled by this well presented very clever business model ( in the same way that walt Disney / coca cola / mcdonalds are all good business models )

and these corporate chain stores wreak a havoc in the livlihoods of the veritable lunatics that are as much a part of the history of the place as smugglers and fishermen and the surf swept shores

Support the invest in real art campaign

to coincide with us launching our Interior Design services and our new picture framing services we are to remind all of our customers that we will under no circumstances be reframing any whistlefish prints that are brought to us and we will discourage such behaviour as it tends to upset our artists.
you bought the cheap factory print in its horrible plastic frame so you live with it!!!!

As we will continue to be running our invest in real art campaign from all of our premises to encourage the public to once again invest in thier local talent by getting out there and if possible meeting the artists your investing in , in stead of buying something from an individual whom knows nothing about the subject.

Limiting The Supply.

Too many artists these days feel the need to sell print after print in order to cash in on the popularity of a single image and ultimately reducing the amount of time that is dedicated to the production of the real work.
At Art By Valerio we ensure the exclusive nature of our very unique product by limiting any prints made from an original image to a series of 50 all of which come bearing the artists signature on both the print surface and again on the surrounding display mount. Each print is issued a catalogue number to enable cross referencing at any time  and each print also comes with a A5 connotation card ( These are hand written notes by the artist concerning the work and are a similar version as the ones that accompany all Originals. All Signed and Dated.)
The nature of these works takes the artist a great deal of time in preparation and production each piece commanding several weeks for completion. The disposition that can occur from the gruelling efforts to produce these renderings have made them quite sought after pieces in thier own right , even more so since the artist has decreed that any pieces that have not sold within his lifetime and are left in his personal collection including all works in progress and sketchbooks will be DESTROYED!!!

Having worked with contemporaries such as Sue Lord, Robert Lenkiewicz, Gina Farrell, Howard Brown , Tom Mccracken, Rubin Hudd and Tony Tewfik, his accomplishments look only to continue evoking and inspiring.

The foundation to all civilisation!

They say that an image can convey a thousand words, if this is indeed true then it supersedes the need for a written language or so one might be inclined to believe.
From the dawn of man civilisations have captured wishes and experience through the mediums of the arts from cave paintings to present day graffiti the overwhelming desire that mankind has always had to create. This of course has a Yin and Yang parody for as well as we are able to create so adept are we, indeed endowed with an ability to destroy, but to create order in an engulfing chaos , to catalogue, identify and to explain so that we might be able to improve our influence against the seeming disorder to be able to create a more autonomous equilibrium in which to live and be able to carry out our day to day lives.
when we go back to what we unwittingly describe as the basic level; Neolithic Man for example, tribal society has its own hierarchy of belief and ritual each person within the community acts according to the role imposed upon them in accordance with that hierarchy, at the end of daylight hours when it is no longer viable to track or hunt or engage many of the activities that tribal societies conduct during the hours of high visibility.
We are to presume that the individual who having completed the daily tasks remained alert and determined enough to follow through with the compulsion beyond that of his company, to sit by fire light and to whittle or to paint or draw to make something that was a reflection of something that he or she felt.
When our earliest ancestors were first seeking shelter from the elements in the pre dawn of human habitation. To prevent themselves sitting in the mud they went and got a stone or log to sit on, over time others began to do the same, the first of our ancestors to encourage this began to sit on there makeshift seat come rain or shine ...and began to work the wood/stone, so that over time it displayed pictorial carvings of fanciful things.
The dawn of trade, industry, and literate humans?

Valerioism its Valerious!

Valerioism began just before the turn of the twenty first century in Cornwall and concerns the movement inspired by the prominent yet elusive artist Valerio. Whos influence was to inflame the entire establishment, not only through art but also through architecture , poetry, music and philosophy and waqs the initial turning point of recreational professionalism. It turned away from what had become the convention and pre conception of what art was generally considered to be in that place and time.

After the commercialization and corporate attempts to monopolise the high street means of art retail , the inevitable retaliation by the true creative core, the independent artists and galleries, was to steer once again towards the raw essence of true social , theological , and environmental concerns in an attempt to once again create enduring art and to encourage genuine patrons to think and feel, instead of succumbing to the inherent obsessive compulsive acquisition mentality that had become so common.

In turn this coined the term 'Valerious' to describe a system of embracing ones existence and to literally live life till it kills you. An ironically stoic approach, whilst still making acknowledgement of the profound importance of influence and suggestion for the beneficial progression of humanity.
During these politically charged decades some even considered it to encompass a kind of martyrdom tendency.

The London Underground.

In regard to the recent article featured in Thursday's Evening Standard, the Arts Council's position seems to be under attack from the governments frenzied cuttings. The real problem that is apparent here in these times of economic turmoil and uncertainty is that there simply isn't enough production and manufacture happening here.

This country was always through  the pages of history a very lucrative place to be, we had the raw materials and the ingenuity to be able to take the very fabric of the countryside and turn it not only into a means of sustenance, but so much more than that, with the development of labour saving technologies medicinal technologies and humanitarian policy.

In recent years we have seen the huge increases in the prices of certain commodities, take fuel and property alone, using just those two examples as a means of gauging production and consumption. Both could now be argued as a limited resource, and ones given the anticipated continued population explosions would denote that perhaps this trend of taking commodities that used to be plentiful and are now perceivably harder to evenly distribute. If you take those commodities out of the reach of the poorest people by means of overvaluation then they become less accustomed to being so reliant on it. Anyone familiar with the enclosure acts of the 1700s knows that  the dividing and redistribution of common land was tackled in much the same way, then those who would ordinarily desire those commodities will 'choose' to be less dependent on them as financial constraint's coerce them into finding a more economically viable means within the limits of their own budgets.

Phew, so when the creatives are undermined and ridiculed, you know that as our last testament to a productive people that could actually work themselves out of poverty using only the land that they were born into dwindles from the imagination of the majority that have allowed themselves to be blindsided.

Leave it to those with the sense of imagination and direction, to try something different and personally I can think of no better way to begin than to take the land back from those that would keep it from us, and to encourage as many as would care to live a different way to steer our infra-structure back to the people relying on themselves a little more instead of having to show obedient gratitude for the minimum we are granted by the powers that be .

Consider this.....

Let it be known across the land,
That the images cast by this very hand,
If refused as daily bread,
Will all be gone once im dead.

what happened to the late Robert Lenkiewicz was really nothing short of a tragedy, the immediate repute and commercial value of the Artist after he died was so immediate , so heart breaking really as to warrant a reflective thought !

I remember reading about another artist from the region ( although actually I forget his name now ) but this particular artist had generated quite a body of work and a suitable reputation to boot ..... and he left instruction for all of his unsold work to be destroyed when he died , as a means of attempting to prevent exactly this kind of thing happening....... a notion that really appeals to me !!

Consider this.....

having just returned from what i consider to be a freaking screaming maniac of a place i cant help but appreciate my surroundings all the more and be very thankful for the specific rythems of these hills of mine ......

Monday, 14 March 2011

what can be made of this......

You walk into a gallery showcasing over 20 different artists from a 20 mile radius from proffessional status to amateur with more varieties than you could shake sticks at in watercolour acrylic and oils with a sale price on all commission pieces,
you take a 2 second look shake your head and say " I PREFER THE OTHER GALLERY " Even tho the other gallery only sell factory prints by a load of commercial comedians.

I do wonder sometimes if people are all that well in the head perhaps the concentration of coffee in the blood and the lack of oxygen in our brains but me thinks there is a terminal madness descending upon the human race.

hold on it might get a bit bumpy up ahead

The Challenge Afoot

The absurdity of a lifetime of futile labour is the worst case scenario for an artisan such as myself, to produce works of no apparent commercial value in the scale of  receding markets for the sake of the work itself; and yet when you compare that to whatever the majority are willing to trade up the majority of there lives to attain, perhaps it isnt as bleak as all that!!!

isms and ologies depict the very fabric of human understanding!

the very fabric of human understanding is rooted so deeply in various aspects of historical relevance, though few have been able to carry the momentum or influence of  the artists image or the written word. The very unlikely pairing of Art and the Sciences is the very spawning point at which our most human of attributes ( understanding) is most taxed.
through all of sciences historical categorizations the diagram has proved the most reliable tool for the recording of results the planning of investigations and the communication of ideas.
To find the most interesting records of history instead of looking for dates of specific monarchical rulings or political shift, seek your references from the artistic or scientific records as the most accurate portrayal human reaction to unjust government and relays a real sense of this society of ours and the way in which we consider our own parts to play.

BEWARE THE WHISTLING FISH

Beware the whistling fish, it wanders a wicked mile.
and it looks at you from behind a crocodile smile.
it presents itself finely whilst it robs yourself blindly.
as what youve just brought will fade in a short while.

As Dr Valerio once wrote.
"I sit in places you would not dare go to conceive of things you would fear to even imagine"

As Alduos Huxley once wrote.
"What if i had been a painter of genius i would have made of my old grey flannels, not much, heaven knows in comparison with the reality; but enough to delight generation after generation of beholders, enough to make them understand, at least a little of the significance of what,in our pathetic imbecility, we call 'mere things' and disregard in favour of television."
